![]() ![]() Yes, the French love their language and don’t enjoy hearing it butchered. Voilà, they speak English with you! They don’t want to hear your bad French I’ve had this happen a few times (I know because they told me).Įnglish is becoming more and more important for work, travel and daily life in Europe and they may not have a million opportunities to converse with a native speaker. Just as you may be trying to improve your French by using it in public, French people may notice your accent and hear an opportunity to practice their English. It is not out of rudeness, just out of ease of understanding, which is the whole point of a conversation. This especially applies if they can tell your French isn’t great and they know their English is better. If you speak French to someone and they speak English well, they may just assume it is easier to speak English together. If they think you are a foreigner, they will switch to English if they can in an effort to be helpful. The same concept applies to people on the street you may speak to in French. It is their job to make your shopping experience good, so they switch to English out of courtesy to you. Since English is the language of tourism in France, many if not most shop employees speak English. Almost all the employees in clothing stores do this to me. ![]() This is especially true if you are in a shop of some kind. Here are a few motivations: They are trying to be helpful How they decide to answer probably has less to do with them judging you (which I used to think) and more to do with trying to make the conversation work. But don’t freak out, French people (most likely) aren’t doing this because they’re rude or hate you.Įven if your French is good, a native speaker almost certainly knows you aren’t French as soon as you open your mouth from your accent. It’s a frustrating, but common occurrence for expats in France - You ask a question in French and the response comes in English. ![]()

There are wide variations in the development, severity, and order of appearance of cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations in individuals. In most cases, the first symptom of narcolepsy to appear is excessive and overwhelming daytime sleepiness. The opposite of this situation (failure to activate this protective paralysis) occurs in rapid eye movement behavior disorder Cataplexy is generally considered to be unique to narcolepsy and is analogous to sleep paralysis in that the usually protective paralysis mechanism occurring during sleep is inappropriately activated. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of people with narcolepsy experience automatic behavior during sleep episodes.ĭaytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations also occur in people who do not have narcolepsy, more frequently in people who are suffering from extreme lack of sleep. Automatic behavior means that a person continues to function (talking, putting things away, etc.) during sleep episodes, but awakens with no memory of performing such activities. Hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid, often frightening, dreamlike experiences that occur while dozing, falling asleep and/or while awakening. This is often frightening but is not dangerous. There’s no indication that you need to do this, nor why it should be a significant choice, and it has no obvious effect beyond making the next part of the game more difficult because now you have to do it with no double jump. In order to prevent Curly from dying later, you have to ignore Professor Booster entirely and proceed through the eastern door without talking to him. Well, you know that tricky jump in the vertical shaft that Professor Booster falls down? It turns out that it is just barely possible to make it without the Booster 0.8, though you only get one shot. Owing to your limited underwater mobility, you have no means of retrieving Curly’s body, so you’re forced to leave her behind in the boss chamber as you make your escape. ![]() You awaken to discover that Curly has sacrificed herself to save you by giving you her rebreather. The Booster 0.8 allows you to easily reach the door on the eastern side of the shaft, where you find Curly waiting on the other side.įollowing another co-op run and gun section and a short puzzle, you fight a giant boss, after which the room fills completely with water and your character drowns. When you talk to Professor Booster, he gives you a jetpack-like item called the Booster 0.8 (basically Cave Story’s equivalent of the obligatory double jump upgrade), then promptly dies from injuries sustained in the fall. (The timing of this event is apparently purely coincidental – your arrival doesn’t cause it.) Most players’ first impulse is going to be to jump down the shaft after him even if it isn’t, you probably won’t make the jump to the eastern door on the first try, and there’s no way to climb back up if you miss it, so in practice you’ll probably end up at the bottom of the shaft with the Professor anyway. On the east side of the shaft is another ledge with another door, separated by a large gap that’s very finicky to jump across.Īs soon as you enter this area, another character from earlier in the game, Professor Booster, falls from the top of the shaft and smashes into the ground at the bottom. On the west side of the shaft is the door you just came out of, and a small ledge. Partway through the Labyrinth, you enter a door and emerge into a tall, vertical shaft. Escaping the Labyrinth then turns into a faux co-op section, with Curly as your AI partner.
